Gold Award in Urban Community Category - Kings Heath Floral Trail

Following an excellent presentation, the Judges were shown the vegetable garden of Fox Hollies School.

The judges were then taken on a whistle stop tour of the Kings Heath Floral Trail.

One can not fail to be impressed, from the richness of its two parks, the floral displays throughout, the vibrant business and retail outlets, it’s welcoming and well used churches, and at its hub the incredibly and awe inspiring community which is Kings Heath.

All pervading on the day, was a sense of place, civic pride and ownership for the many jewels that are on the Kings Heath Floral Trail.

Areas of achievement:

• The themed and well maintained vibrant floral displays throughout,

    from hanging baskets to wall planters

• Box planters

• The stunning and opulently planted barrier troughs near to Highbury Park

• The Vegetable Garden and newly installed pond at Fox Hollies School

• The Edible Garden at Kings Heath Community Centre

• Kings Heath Park –

    The Hidden Treasure Trail created by Colmore School Pupils

• Highbury Park’s Hay Meadow and Wooodland Flower Meadow

• The tree grafting for a new Community Orchard in Highbury Park

• The Kings Heath Transition Group who maintain the wooden planters

• 9 Carrots Scheme – reducing carbon foot print

• The exciting new Village Square Project at All Saints Church

• Highbury Park Friends

• The Business Recycling Scheme

• Removal of blue tack initiative by HSBC Bank

• The new 2011 category prize “Best improved shop frontage”

• Well maintained shopping areas virtually litter free

• Street furniture, developing the civic image, by repainting lamp posts “heritage green”, renewal of litter bins
